Salinas Pueblo Missions National Monument questions
Which Salinas mission should I visit first?
Quarai and Abó are closest to Mountainair, about 10 to 15 minutes away. Gran Quivira is the largest but about 30 minutes south.
Why were the Salinas pueblos abandoned?
By the 1670s drought, famine, disease and raids led the Pueblo people to leave. Many joined other pueblos along the Rio Grande.
Are the Salinas sites free?
Yes, all three sites are free. Each has a small visitor area and short trails.
